1. Decision-making is not a button, but a dynamic process
According to Vickers (1996) and Araújo (2010), decision-making in sports is highly dependent on:
- What you sees (perception)
- What you equivalent that is possible (affordances)
- What you durft to do (action)
There is no single 'decision moment', but a continuous interaction between observing and reacting. Training should stimulate that process.
2. 'Game intelligence' can be trained
According to research by Williams & Ford (2008), elite athletes are not necessarily faster or stronger, but they are:
- Better at recognizing patterns
- Faster in selecting relevant cues
- More effective in predicting the actions of others
This means: game insight ≠ innate. It can be developed, provided you train it well.
3. Realistic context is crucial
Several studies show that decision-making develops best in representative learning situations.

- Variation in situations and positions
- Space to make mistakes and reflect
